Advanced oxidation processes, AOPs. Theoretical background. Generation of hydroxyl radicals and their role. Reaction kinetics and degradation mechanisms of organic pollutants by hydroxyl radicals. Influence of process parameters and scavenging media on degradation efficiency. Removal of priority pollutants, biodegradability and toxicity. Practical considerations of AOPs in water and wastewater technologies, advantages and limitations. Different modelling approaches for prediction and simulation of AOPs efficiency. Basic principles of UV irradiation. Light absorption and dissociation energy of chemical bonds. UV sources and characteristics. Actinometry. Molar absorption coefficient and quantum yield. Direct photolysis. UV assisted AOPs. Photochemical and photocatalytical AOPs, typical oxidants and catalysts, and their alternatives. Fenton reaction. Homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton and photo Fenton type processes. Influence of process parameters, reaction kinetics and mechanisms.
