Description:
Course objective:
Gain knowledge about the synthesis, structure and properties of functional ceramic materials.

Course content:
1. Introduction to ceramic materials (structure vs. properties)
2. Division of ceramics according to functionality
3. Aluminum oxide ceramics
4. Zirconium oxide ceramics
5. Control test
6. Bioactive ceramics
7. Ceramic materials in optics
8. Ferroelectric ceramics
9. Characterization of ceramic materials
10. Control test
11. Porous ceramic materials
12. Ceramic coatings
13. Non-oxide ceramics
14. Control test

Laboratory exercises:
1. Preparation of ceramics by sol-gel process
2. Hydrothermal synthesis of ceramic powders
3. Synthesis of ceramic powders by precipitation method

Finished undergraduate courses

Development of general and specific student competencies:
Understanding of modern theories and practical experimental techniques related to materials science and engineering. Conducting complex material characterization experiments and processing of measurement data.

Student responsibilities:
Attending lectures and laboratory exercises.

Monitoring student work:
- Three control tests during the semester (min. 50% of points on each of the tests brings exemption from of the oral exam)
- Written and oral exam
