Degradation and modification of polymers
The aim of the course:
Students get the knowledge about degradation and modification of polymers. The mechanisms of degradation of different types of polymer materials are studied. The possible characterization methods of the degradation products are analysed. Methods for polymer modification are explained because they result with new polymer types with improved properties. Degradation and modification of polymers is connected with polymer recycling and with influence to the environment.
The program of the course:
1. Introduction to degradation
2. Mechanisms of degradation
3. The influence of oxygen and ozone
4. Thermal degradation and photooxidation
5. Mechanical degradation
6. Degradation of polyolefins
7. Degradation of natural polymers
8. Polymers susceptible to hydrolysis
9. Experimental techniques for the characterization of degradation products
10. Modification of polymers
11. Types of modifiers
12. Polymers with new properties
13. Recycling of polymers
14. Recovery of polymer materials
Seminar: presentation or written seminar on a defined topic.
Prerequisites for enrolling in the course:
Organic chemistry I and II, Physical chemistry I and II, Transfer of matter and energy, Unit operation systems, Reaction engineering and catalysis
Prerequisites for attending the course: -
Development of general and specific student competencies:
Students get the knowledge about degradation and how to modify the polymers and with additives obtain the polymer with improved properties. Techniques for the characterization of polymers before and after degradation products get the insight into the properties of the materials.
Student obligations in teaching and their performance:
1. Attending the 75% of the lectures
2. Seminar work
Teaching methods:
1. Power point presentations
2. Students get teaching materials on the web page of the course
Type of examination of knowledge and examination:
Written exam. Two partial exams, each partial exam after specific lectures. Students who do not attend partial exams and do not gain enough points on them, must attend the written exam in exam terms.
Method of monitoring the quality and performance of courses: students survey
Course learning outcomes:
1. to determine the type of degradation of polymer material
2. to consider the influence od different degradation agents on polymer material
3. to recommend the experimental methods for the characterization of polymer materials
4.to choose a suitable modifier for a certain polymer material
5. to estimate the suitability of the different methods for the recycling of waste polymer materials
Program level learning outcomes:
1. solve problems scientifically, even if the problem definitions are incomplete or are formulated in an unusual way, thereby providing the spectrum of possible solutions
2. apply innovative methods in solving problems based on fundamental principles
3. solve real chemical engineering problems by scientific approach
4. independently plan their theoretical and experimental research
