The BioSmart project develops integrated chemical systems for valorising waste activated sludge into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), biodegradable biopolymers with high added value. The aim is to optimize PHA production using selected microorganisms and precise monitoring of small organic acids through chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Advanced digital systems and artificial intelligence algorithms enable real-time predictive modelling and process optimization. The resulting biopolymers will be characterized to determine physicochemical and mechanical properties relevant for industrial applications. Expected outcomes include increased production efficiency, waste reduction, and enhanced technological sustainability, contributing to circular economy strategies and the development of environmentally responsible biotechnological solutions.
