Opis predmeta:
Course aim: The aim of the course is to present corrosion processes, the mechanism and kinetic of corrosion reactions. The influence of corrosion of structural materials on environment and economy is examined. Corrosion protection methods are presented and a special emphasis is placed on those protection methods that pollute the environment. Possibilities for replacing various toxic substances and risky procedures with new non-toxic compounds and procedures that do not present hazard to environment are analyzed.

Subject content:
1st week
Types and causes of pollution.
2nd week
Corrosion of metals: causes, theoretical background and types of corrosion processes. Dependence of corrosion rate and forms of corrosion damage on environment.
3rd week
Biocorrosion
4th week
Effects of corrosion on environment: influence of corrosion products on environment (water, soil). Endangerment of human lives and environment by the corrosion of structural materials.
5th week
Importance of adequate corrosion protection and monitoring in various industries: chemical, food, pharmaceutical, oil and gas industry.
6th week
Corrosion in human body. Corrosion in nuclear power plants and canisters for nuclear waste storage. Corrosion stability of stainless steel in various environment
7th week
Written exam
8th week
Increased corrosion in polluted environments. Corrosion of cultural heritage
9th week
Corrosion protection methods that negatively influence to the ecological system: metal protection by treatment of corrosion medium; environmental compliance of corrosion inhibitors (problem of toxic inhibitors); design and investigation of new non-toxic corrosion inhibitors.
10th week
Electrochemical methods for corrosion protection: cathodic protection (problem of soluble anodes). Organic coatings (toxic additives to protective coatings; pigments of heavy metals, organic solvents).
11th week
Protective coatings: problems in surface preparation, metallic coatings (highly toxic electroplating baths);
12th week
The analysis of possibilities for replacing toxic methods by newly-developed environmentally acceptable corrosion protection methods and practices
13th week
Presentation of student works. Discussion
14th week

General and specific competences:
- Understanding of hazards that corrosion and inadequate corrosion protection present to environment and human health;
- Recognizing how some of the corrosion protection methods may endanger environment and human health due to the release of toxic compounds;
- Ability to determine which corrosion protection method is the most adequate for given corrosion issue;
- Relating presence of pollution and climatic parameters to the corrosion level of various structural materials.

Forms of education:
Lectures, laboratory practice, consultations and seminar papers.

Form of the exam: Writing exam. Oral presentation of the seminar paper.

Learning outcomes
- assess hazards that corrosion and inadequate corrosion protection present to environment and human health;
- estimate how some of the corrosion protection methods may endanger environment and human health due to the release of toxic compounds;
- judge which corrosion protection method is the most adequate for given corrosion issue;
- relate presence of pollution and climatic parameters to the corrosion level of various structural materials.
-explain causes of selected corrosion issue based on literature survey.

Corrosion processes

Learning outcomes
-knowledge about the causes and types of corrosion

Criteria for learning evaluation
-student should be able to identify causes of corrosion and possible type of corrosion that will occur for specific material in some environment.

3rd theme
Harmful substances released to environment due to the corrosion or in corrosion protection

Learning outcomes
-knowledge about the harmful substances that can be released to environment due to the corrosion or in corrosion protection

Criteria for learning evaluation
- student should be able to identify harmful compound that can be released from particular construction or process related to corrosion

4th theme
Corrosion damage

Learning outcomes
-understanding why is corrosion protection important for safe operation of various industrial processes and stability of metallic constructions.
-ability to evaluate the critical parts of metallic constructions or technological processes where inadequate corrosion protection may cause serious damage

Criteria for learning evaluation
-student should be able to evaluate the critical parts of metallic constructions or technological processes where inadequate corrosion protection may cause serious damage
-student should determine the corrosion rate of metallic materials used in medicine as implants.

5th theme
Influence of environment parameters on corrosion type and rate

Learning outcomes
-understanding how changes of parameters of environment influence on corrosion resistance of metallic materials

Criteria for learning evaluation
-student should determine corrosion rate of selected metal in various environments

6th theme
Corrosion protection methods

Learning outcomes
- knowledge about application of various corrosion protection methods and potential hazards they bring to environment
-knowledge about necessary modifications in existing corrosion protection methods needed to comply with recent environmental regulation.

Criteria for learning evaluation
-student should be able to distinguish potential hazards of some corrosion protection method and analyze how they can be overcomed
